Live from BLB AsiaDesk: China, the first to break through one million patent applications in a year.

According to a report published last Wednesday, November 23 by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), China is officially the first country in the world to deposit 1 million patent applications in a single year (2015).

Most patent applications relate to inventions in the field of electrical engineering, telecommunications, information technology and medical technology.

For the moment, the bulk of the applications concerns the protection of patents within the Chinese borders, but slowly and gradually also the international patent applications are increasing.

The report shows that Asia (especially China) is once again the true leader in patent and trademark production. In Asia are in fact deposited 62 percent of the world's patent applications and 55 percent of trademark applications. Worldwide, last year approximately 2.9 million patent applications were filed, an increase of 7.8 percent compared to 2014. Behind China, the United States follow with 526.296 patent applications, in turn followed by Japan with 454,285 and South Korea with 238,015 patent applications.

The figure emerged from the report of the WIPO confirmed in full the success of innovation policies put in place by China in recent years, and above all seem that investments in university sector are leading to the desired results, thanks to the creation of several centers of excellence that shine in field of scientific research. It cannot be forgotten the great contribution to scientific research given by the Chinese startup movement, which in large districts such as Shenzhen and Beijing has substantially contributed to the creation of the one true global alternative to Silicon Valley in the design and production of hardware and software.
